Physical therapy and general whining!

I haven't been very vigilant with my posts lately, which I apologize for. I fell in May and have had some terrible issues with my back. I am doing physical therapy now and on the road to recovery but wow....it has been a painful summer. And now summer is almost over!

Cooler weather means more knitting and crocheting. It is my favorite time of year! I love fall colors and luscious yarns.

I just finished a shawl in a lovely caramel color yarn with sequins...just in time for autumn. I will post a photo next week.

Time for some fall creations...

Here is a pretty knitted cowl. The free pattern is here.

I love this crocheted one. The pearls are a fabulous addition!

Enjoy,
Debby

New vintage pattern-dainty crochet baby bonnet

I got the first two patterns completed from the vintage magazines that my sisters found for me.

Dainty Crochet Baby Bonnet pattern from 1928

It is a pretty style with a medallion on the crown and flower medallions across the brim.

Dainty Crochet Baby Bonnet in Irish Crochet from 1928

This bonnet has a center crown of a rose surrounded by six leaves, one attached to each petal.

I will next work on a few done in luscious tatting!

Irish crochet edging - free pattern

To get ready for the Irish crochet bonnet, you may want to practice a bit on some less complicated edging.

Here is a pretty design from FreeVintageCrochet.com

For Irish Crochet Edgings, use J. & P. Coats Tatting-Crochet, Size 70, with Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 13; or J. & P. Coats Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Size 100, with a No. 15 or 16 hook.

Looks nice!

Magazines from 1920's....and some upcoming patterns

My sisters found some great magazines from the 1920's for me. They each are full of great articles, advertisements and patterns.

I will be working on some new patterns from them this week. I love baby bonnets so I will start with them.

There are some in lovely irish crochet work and others in tatting.

Another pattern to use up yarn...cotton yarn

I am always on the lookout for patterns that will use up bits of yarn but still make something useful. A fast project is even better.

Here is a unique dishcloth pattern that you can knit up in no time. Use up your bits of cotton yarn and have some extra cloths for hostess gifts!

Do you have some favorite patterns to use up odd bits of yarn?

Victorian treasures from England

I have posted some Victorian treasures for sale on ETSY.

The Shilling guide is a precious primary source for many lost arts such as lace making.

A few examples of the instructions included are for carrickmacross lace, honiton lace, irish crochet lace, limerick lace, point lace, tatting, teneriffe lace and torchon lace. There are projects in smocking, knitting and crochet as well.

There are some single issues of Weldon's Practical guides and Fancy Needlework Illustrated too.

Some new patterns just published!

I just published two new patterns.

The first is a take off on the Celtic Doggie Stepping Stones Dog sweater pattern. I have gotten so may compliments on this design but not everyone needs a dog sweater. A dishcloth is an easy to complete project and a fun way to practice knitting an Aran cable design.

It can be knit on size 8 or 9 US knitting needles (5 or 5.5 mm) with worsted wt cotton yarn.

The pattern is available on Etsy, Ravelry and Craftsy.

The second pattern is a new doggie sweater in the Celtic Doggie collection. This time I have combined cables and lace for this easy to knit design.

It can be knit on size 8 or 9 US knitting needles (5 or 5.5 mm) with worsted wt yarn.

The pattern is available on Etsy, Ravelry and Craftsy.

What do I make for a boy's baby shower?

All the lovely historic, lacy patterns that I have for bonnets, booties etc are great but I don't think all modern mothers are really looking for that sort of thing for their boys. They don't seem to be as sentimental as me! Oh well,  but I just found this little knitting pattern for a football at KnitPicks. With a bib, I think it would fill the bill for a shower gift. Do you have any favorites for a baby boy's shower?

Send over a picture if you make one!

Easy pattern that will use up left over yarn and antique booklets on EBAY.

This is not a historic pattern but it is a cutey. I am always on the lookout for projects that will use up little bits of yarn and will provide small gifts that I can give away.

Free Knitting pattern for funny bunnies. Click here for free pattern.

Suggested Yarn: You pick!
Needles: You Pick! You will need DPNs and one circular needle (any length) in your chosen size.
Gauge: The pattern is written to be knit with any yarn and needle combination: simply knit your yarn with needles 2-3 sizes smaller than those recommended to create a tight knit fabric the stuffing doesn't show through.
Yardage: 30-50 yards MC and 5-10 yards white yarn for tail

PS. I have started listing some of my finds from England on eBAY

Still not spring time...

I live in Virginia and wow...we have had a nasty winter. Even though it is March, it is not spring time yet. Though it warms up in the afternoon, it is really cold in the morning. I love these fingerless gloves for this type of weather. Makes driving with a cold steering wheel a bit more bearable!

This pattern is free on KnitPicks.com

The Gansey inspired stitch pattern is really a nice touch and shouldn't be too hard to knit up.

Back from England...

Well, I returned from England at the end of last week but it has taken quite a few days for the jet lag brain fog to clear. Am I getting older? No, no, no!

The weather in Kent was beautiful and sunny; almost 60 F every day. Today in Virginia we have freezing rain and snow. Hey, it is March. No more snow.

In the mean time, I have been unpacking and going through my goodies that I brought back. Over the next couple of days I will be posting patterns and antique/vintage items on EBAY and ETSY.

Here is one to get you started:

I love this simple to knit pattern from Weldon's. You can purchase it now on ETSY and download it immediately. Send over any photos from your projects.
