Historic Articles about Lacemaking from 1900's

I was researching something else and stumbled across this interesting collecting magazine called The Connoisseur from about 1900. Along with other intriguing items, some of the issues had a section on Lace.

This issue has a particularly interesting and well illustrated article about English needlepoint lace.

Imagine seeing some of these pieces in person. I can't imagine the amount of work involved. Just beautiful!

Magazines from 1920's....and some upcoming patterns

My sisters found some great magazines from the 1920's for me. They each are full of great articles, advertisements and patterns.

I will be working on some new patterns from them this week. I love baby bonnets so I will start with them.

There are some in lovely irish crochet work and others in tatting.

Victorian treasures from England

I have posted some Victorian treasures for sale on ETSY.

The Shilling guide is a precious primary source for many lost arts such as lace making. 

A few examples of the instructions included are for carrickmacross lace, honiton lace, irish crochet lace, limerick lace, point lace, tatting, teneriffe lace and torchon lace. There are projects in smocking, knitting and crochet as well. 

There are some single issues of Weldon's Practical guides and Fancy Needlework Illustrated too.

Never heard of Carrickmacross lace? Here is a link to an interesting article on Wikipedia with some background and examples. LOVELY!

Knitted edging from 1867

Here is a knitting pattern for knitted edging. It is from Godey's Ladies book 1867. The instructions suggest it for a bedcover. That's alot of stitches! I think it would be a great bottom edge to a shawl.

Patterns on Kindle

I am new to the world of tablets, Kindles, etc. Do you use one? I am happy with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. I can actually see and print the print on the screen! One app that was pre-loaded was the Kindle Reader.

Dress up your bed with a pretty pillow case

Do you have some lace trim that you have knit or crocheted and need to do something with it? 

Check out this lovely post on AT HOME ON THE BAY, and make your own pillowcases to dress up your bed.

Materials for One Standard Pillowcase with Lace Trim:

1 yard of 45″ wide fabric

 1-1/2 yards of trim

 coordinating thread

sewing machine, iron, scissors, pins

Are those pillowcases beautiful? It is a great idea to use such pretty print fabric. I need to get cracking!

Guipure Netting...directions on Google Books.

If you remember, I found this lovely doily mentioned in my post a few days ago.

I haven't made anything like this before so I did some research. It appears to be guipure netting.

Here is a resource on Google Books that give detailed instructions on how to make lace like this from 1885.

There is an illustration for a project that has many similar features as my doily.

I am not sure that I am up to this but it looks like an interesting process. Has anyone seen this or tried it?

Heirloom knitting resource....free patterns

Check out these fabulous patterns for round knitted doilies. These can be used to make more than doilies...how about a lacy washcloth or even a round shawl with some alteration. I love this style of doily since it is knit on two needles then grafted at the end to the first row.
